SUMMARY:Volunteer Days: Piping Plover Habitat @ Wisconsin Point - Superior
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary on August 6th from 3:00-6:00pm. During this volunteer maintenance day\, we will be handling unwanted vegetation within targeted areas. If the wind and weather cooperates\, we will be managing the invasives by burning them on site.\n\n\n\nCalling all volunteers! Lend a hand however your schedule allows and join the St. Louis River Alliance on Thursday August 6th from 3:00-6:00pm!  \nDuring this volunteer maintenance day\, we will be handling unwanted vegetation within targeted areas on Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary. If the wind and weather cooperates\, we will be managing the invasives by burning them on site. Participants are encouraged to email Mikayla\, at watertrail@stlouisriver.org if they are interested in helping at one\, both\, or all three of these days so we have enough tools to go around. Gloves\, buckets\, shovels\, and contracting bags will be provided. Please feel free bring your own equipment/materials if you have them. \nNo prior experience needed; safety and plant identification will be provided. Bending\, pulling\, burning\, and digging are part of the management plan and will require physical movement to complete. The sand will make pulling easier inside the site\, and we will be using shovels and gloves to manage vegetation where it is needed. \nCome as long or as little as you’d like\, and check out the site to learn more about how the 2026 season went! More hands\, and more smiles make for easier work. \nBring: water\, sun hat\, sunglasses\, gardening or leather gloves\, 5-gallon bucket (if you have any) kneeling pad\, snack\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, long socks\, and protective clothing from bugs and vegetation with thorns\, poison ivy\, etc. \nADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER DATES \n\n\nVegetation Management: Friday August 6th from 3:00-6:00pm \n\n\nPulling\, weeding \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Vegetation Management: Friday August 7th from 3:00-6:00pm \n\n\nPulling\, weeding \n\n\n\n\nWoody Debris: Monday August 10th 3:00-6:00pm \n\n\nChainsaw\, and burning on site if wind allows \n\n\n\n\nDirections: The Piping Plover Habitat Site is located on Wisconsin Point; directions to exact location follow. \n\n\nHwy 2 East/Hwy 53 South through Superior\, WI. \n\n\nTurn left onto Moccasin Mike Road (toward City of Superior landfill). \n\n\nTurn left onto Wisconsin Point Road (before you reach landfill). **NOTE: Last public restroom at first parking lot on right (Lot 1). \n\n\nDrive almost all the way to the end of the road\, pass through Pine Tree forest and pass Native American burial grounds on the right. \n\n\nJust shortly past this there is a gravel road to the left with a brown gate. \n\n\nPlease walk down gravel approach toward the Bay side of Wisconsin Point\, walk through a 12-foot-tall perimeter fence gate. \n\n\nTurn left and walk down the beach to check-in with SLRA staff. SUMMARY:Hiroshima and Nagasaki Observance @ Enger Park Japanese Bell - Duluth
DESCRIPTION:VFP and GFP will remember the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – August 6 and 9\, 1945 – on Sunday\, August 9\, 2026. This will mark 81 years – eight decades – of nuclear weapons insanity.\nWe will begin at Noon in Superior for the weekly Women in Black Silent Vigil for the ongoing genocide in Palestine (and the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran). The time is 12:00 to 12:30 and the location is the City Center Park on the corner of Belknap and Tower. There is lots of parking and it is handicap accessible.\nWe will move to Enger Park by the Japanese Bell for the anniversary observance. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 PM. We will have a short program entitled Imagining a Nuclear Weapons Free World. We will have eight short readings about the madness of believing nukes are necessary and advocating for their abolition.
