DESCRIPTION:Upper Midwest Blue Blazes Academy: a combined Crew Leadership & Trail Skills training for volunteers in MN & WI being hosted by the Brule-St. Croix Chapter\, Border Route Trail Association\, and Superior Hiking Trail Association. \nDates: Thursday\, September 17th – Sunday\, September 20th\, 2026 with full days of training being held on Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday\nLocation: we’ll be meeting at the Solon Springs Community Center in Solon Springs\, WI. \nFree camping will be available in the nearby area. \nTopics to be covered & instructors (subject to change): \n* Rockwork with Willie Bittner of Great Lakes Trailbuilders\n* Crew leadership with Kim Frederick of Chinook Associates\, LLC\n* Trail Analysis with Tim Malzhan of Trail Eyes\, LLC\n* Rigging with Tamer Ibrahim and Barbara Budd of the Superior Hiking Trail Association\n* Introduction to Chainsaw use (a hands-on practice session)\n* Crosscut saw use with Dan Dueweke of the J45 Chapter NCTA\n* Brushing with Matthew Davis\, NCTA\n* Drainage with Mel Baughman\, CHE Chapter NCTA & Jerome Lemke\, Superior Hiking Trail Association\n* Using mechanized / motorized maintenance equipment with Gary Carlson\, Border Route Trail Association\n* Wilderness Trail Maintenance\n* Introduction to Trail Construction and Trail Maintenance\n* Trailwork for Women – Barbara Budd & Stephanie Hoff\, Superior Hiking Trail Association\n* Wetland Structures – Boardwalk & Puncheon – Brad Stewart\, WI Rovers NCTA \nStay tuned for more details and look for registration information in early July! \nYou are invited to extend your training experience and use what you learned by joining the Wisconsin Roving Trail Crew (aka “the Rovers”) the week of September 21-25 as they work on building a new North Country Trail segment with the Brule-St. Croix Chapter.  The worksite is only 10 miles south of Superior and the crew will camp at the Manitou Valley Campground (map) and will be building new trail from County Road W heading east (map). DESCRIPTION:The St. Louis River Alliance and our partners at the City of Superior will provide garbage bags\, pickers\, gloves\, and buckets. We will be working near the water at times\, so wear long clothing and bring your own gloves and high-boots if you have them; dress for the weather\, and don’t forget a water bottle! \nLocation: Meet at the Woodstock Bay Public Landing Parking Lot (15 White Birch Trail\, Superior\, WI 54880). DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about the practice of harvesting & processing Wild Rice? Manoominikewin – Ojibwemowin for harvesting wild rice – holds both cultural significance and ecological importance. Join the Lake Superior Reserve and UW-Superior on September 20th at the Pokegama Bay Boat Launch from 3:00pm-4:30pm to learn about traditional wild rice harvesting and processing! This free program features traditional rice processing stations\, including parching\, hulling\, and winnowing\, as well as harvesting demos.\nWe’ll gather in light-rain or shine\, and will post a notification day-of for a severe weather cancellation. Rice Processing stations will be available at 3:00pm at the Pokegama Bay Boat Launch (restrooms are available). Parking at the launch will be limited\, so please be prepared to park along the gravel road (Billings Drive).\nCome dressed for the weather and be prepared to move around outdoors.
