SUMMARY:Beginner Kayak Workshop @ Thompson Reservoir - Carlton
DESCRIPTION:Join the St. Louis River Alliance\, in partnership with the University of Minnesota Duluth Recreational Sports Outdoor Program (UMD RSOP) and Day Tripper of Duluth\, for an evening of hands-on instruction designed to help you become a safer\, more confident paddler. \nRather than a traditional paddling class\, this event lets you customize your experience. During registration\, you’ll rank your preferred workshops and be assigned sessions based on your experience level\, interests\, and workshop availability. Small class sizes ensure plenty of personalized instruction. \nWorkshops are offered in three formats: \n\n\nDry Land – Learn essential paddling knowledge without getting on the water. \n\n\nOn Water – Practice paddling techniques while staying in your kayak (expect wet feet and occasional splashing). \n\n\nIn Water – Build confidence through hands-on rescue and recovery skills (expect full immersion). \n\n\nEach workshop includes a location\, activity level\, and “how wet you’ll get” rating to help you choose the sessions that best match your comfort level and goals. \nScroll down to the Workshop Descriptions for details about each session\, including what you’ll learn\, who it’s best suited for\, and any prerequisites. \nWhether you’re preparing for your first kayak purchase\, hoping to paddle the St. Louis River or Lake Superior with more confidence\, or simply looking to develop new skills in a supportive environment\, there’s a workshop for you. \nAll required paddling equipment—including kayaks\, paddles\, personal flotation devices (PFDs)\, and safety gear—will be provided. Participants who own a sea kayak are encouraged to indicate this during registration\, as bringing your own boat will help reduce rental needs. \nParticipants must be 12 years or older. Youth ages 12–17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\nSpace is limited to approximately 60 participants\, and advance registration is required. During registration\, you’ll be asked to rank your first\, second\, and third workshop choices. We will do our best to place participants in their preferred sessions while balancing workshop capacities and experience levels. \nRain date: To be announced. \nIf online registration is not accessible to you\, please contact the St. Louis River Alliance at outreach@stlouisriver.org for assistance. \n\n\n\n\n  \nFollow Link to register  https://www.stlouisriver.org/events/easy-paddling-a-beginner-kayak-workshop?fbclid=IwY2xjawTPIQtleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFyME9vVjFFZGxLSU9mZ2RNc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHnWppvUOYeqmqSRIna8tdOXOouDBM-16tk5uwSMbK7TuRzBAbkdXMRN88rLY_aem_vY70HUiGZDIrNCzoAtwp9Q

SUMMARY:Volunteer Days: Piping Plover Habitat @ Wisconsin Point - Superior
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary on August 6th from 3:00-6:00pm. During this volunteer maintenance day\, we will be handling unwanted vegetation within targeted areas. If the wind and weather cooperates\, we will be managing the invasives by burning them on site.\n\n\n\nCalling all volunteers! Lend a hand however your schedule allows and join the St. Louis River Alliance on Thursday August 6th from 3:00-6:00pm! \nDuring this volunteer maintenance day\, we will be handling unwanted vegetation within targeted areas on Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary. If the wind and weather cooperates\, we will be managing the invasives by burning them on site. Participants are encouraged to email Mikayla\, at watertrail@stlouisriver.org if they are interested in helping at one\, both\, or all three of these days so we have enough tools to go around. Gloves\, buckets\, shovels\, and contracting bags will be provided. Please feel free bring your own equipment/materials if you have them. \nNo prior experience needed; safety and plant identification will be provided. Bending\, pulling\, burning\, and digging are part of the management plan and will require physical movement to complete. The sand will make pulling easier inside the site\, and we will be using shovels and gloves to manage vegetation where it is needed. \nCome as long or as little as you’d like\, and check out the site to learn more about how the 2026 season went! More hands\, and more smiles make for easier work. \nBring: water\, sun hat\, sunglasses\, gardening or leather gloves\, 5-gallon bucket (if you have any) kneeling pad\, snack\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, long socks\, and protective clothing from bugs and vegetation with thorns\, poison ivy\, etc. \nADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER DATES \n\n\nVegetation Management: Friday August 6th from 3:00-6:00pm \n\n\nPulling\, weeding \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Vegetation Management: Friday August 7th from 3:00-6:00pm \n\n\nPulling\, weeding \n\n\n\n\nWoody Debris: Monday August 10th 3:00-6:00pm \n\n\nChainsaw\, and burning on site if wind allows \n\n\n\n\nDirections: The Piping Plover Habitat Site is located on Wisconsin Point; directions to exact location follow. \n\n\nHwy 2 East/Hwy 53 South through Superior\, WI. \n\n\nTurn left onto Moccasin Mike Road (toward City of Superior landfill). \n\n\nTurn left onto Wisconsin Point Road (before you reach landfill). **NOTE: Last public restroom at first parking lot on right (Lot 1). \n\n\nDrive almost all the way to the end of the road\, pass through Pine Tree forest and pass Native American burial grounds on the right. \n\n\nJust shortly past this there is a gravel road to the left with a brown gate. \n\n\nPlease walk down gravel approach toward the Bay side of Wisconsin Point\, walk through a 12-foot-tall perimeter fence gate. \n\n\nTurn left and walk down the beach to check-in with SLRA staff.
