VFP and GFP will remember the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – August 6 and 9, 1945 – on Sunday, August 9, 2026. This will mark 81 years – eight decades – of nuclear weapons insanity.
We will begin at Noon in Superior for the weekly Women in Black Silent Vigil for the ongoing genocide in Palestine (and the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran). The time is 12:00 to 12:30 and the location is the City Center Park on the corner of Belknap and Tower. There is lots of parking and it is handicap accessible.
We will move to Enger Park by the Japanese Bell for the anniversary observance. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 PM. We will have a short program entitled Imagining a Nuclear Weapons Free World. We will have eight short readings about the madness of believing nukes are necessary and advocating for their abolition. We will ring the bell eight times to mourn the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
After the ceremony there will be a BYOB and snacks social time.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT (if you chose to accept) is 1) ATTEND, 2) INVITE OTHERS TO ATTEND – call, email post this on social media, 3) VOLUNTEER to be a reader, 4) Contact Phil Anderson if you can attend and if you will help with the readings or ringing –anderp14@yahoo.com
