Welcome Spring with a centuries-old craft found throughout Eastern Europe. Ukrainian eggs, or pysanky, are created using a wax batik method. We’ll examine traditional design elements, what the colors symbolize, and some of the stories associated with the eggs. During this class, you will learn to use a kistka (tiny funnel on a stick) to draw with melted wax on egg shells. Once you’ve drawn the initial design, you dye the egg in a light color, add more wax, and dye again in the next color. Once all the dyeing is complete, you melt off the wax to reveal your colorful design.
