What is Blue Ice?
Blue ice forms when lake ice becomes so dense and compressed that it absorbs all colors of the spectrum except for blue, which is reflected back to our eyes. Unlike the typical white or frosty ice we’re used to seeing, blue ice is crystal clear and appears in vibrant shades ranging from light turquoise to deep sapphire. While it’s more commonly associated with glaciers, it occasionally appears on Lake Superior when conditions are just right.

Wisconsin Point, located in Superior, Wisconsin, is one of the best places to see blue ice along Lake Superior’s waterfront. Dress warmly – Wisconsin Point can be windy and cold, so layer up! Also, waterproof pants will be especially useful as you’ll want to get low to view the best angles of the ice formations!

Check ice conditions and be careful! – While the shoreline is usually safe, always use caution around ice-covered areas, especially with dogs and young children.
